The Museum of the Gulf Coast
Preserving the History of Mid County & Southeast Texas
The Museum of the Gulf Coast will be at the Port Arthur Senior Expo to talk about local history and legendary characters.
Have you been to the Museum of the Gulf Coast?
Check it out with friends or with your grandkids.
They have a great Janis Joplin exhibit with a replica of her famous Porsche, statues, and memorabilia. You can even pick up a brick from Janis’ childhood home in the gift shop.
Janis isn’t the only local legend enshrined at the Museum of the Gulf Coast.
The Museum of the Gulf Coast’s permanent collection brings to life the history of the region. You can learn about Native Americans, the original European settlers, the oil field boom, and more.
Check their website regularly for traveling exhibits. One of my favorites was a collection of bunks from a Vietnam era troop ship. U.S. GIs had covered their bunks, their only private space with graffiti, art, and music lyrics. The exhibit evoked echoes of their youth, uncertainty into the experiences that waited upon their arrival in Asia, and a time capsule of a unique period in American history.
Are you looking for a fun volunteer opportunity? The Museum of the Gulf Coast offers a great volunteer experience for our Golden Triangle seniors. Man the front desk, host tours (frequently for senior groups), or assist with family fun days.
Speaking of Family Fun Days… Do you have grandkids? Ask about their next family fun day. These special events frequently include a special new exhibit, kid friendly crafts and games, and sometimes even a movie related to the new exhibit’s theme. The museum also hosts a number of seasonal events – Halloween, Christmas.
Are you looking for summer activities for your grandchildren? The Museum of the Gulf Coast hosts unique Port Arthur summer camp experiences for different age groups. Each combines education and entertainment.
